Lawson’s Pride of Somers Point, a newly established non-profit organization, has been formed to aid the officers and crew of the newly commissioned, 154-foot-long Cutter Lawrence Lawson. The ship is presently docked in Cape May Harbor, NJ.
“Somers Point’s rich maritime history made establishing Lawson’s Pride of Somers Point a natural fit. This volunteer organization is comprised of a mix of veterans and residents who are committed to helping the Lawrence Lawson’s officers and crew in any way we can,” explained Somers Point Councilman James Toto. The Wildwoods will officially kick off the 2017 summer season at the Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony on Friday, May 26 at noon on the Andrews Avenue beach next to the Wildwoods Convention Center.
Tourism and city officials, guest speakers and more than 300 elementary school children will participate in the ceremony to officially ‘unlock’ the ocean with a large, ornate key and open the summer season. There will be plenty of colorful kites in the air and after the ‘unlocking’, as the children fly kites that they made earlier that morning in kite-making workshops inside the Convention Center, officially kicking off the International Kite Festival. The Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce presents a weekend of “Who Done It?” during the all-NEW Murder Mystery Weekend of ‘Who killed Peggy Sue at the Hop’ Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20.
The mystery weekend kicks off on Friday, May 19 with a Welcome Party and Old-Fashioned Drive-In Movie at Pacific and Schellenger Avenues in Wildwood. The Welcome Party begins at 7:30 p.m. and the movie begins at 8:15 p.m. Parking will be available nearby. Bring your beach chairs and blankets and enjoy some snacks and soft drinks. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place at the North Wildwood Recreation Center, located at 900 Central Avenue, North Wildwood. The National Judges Association Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Indoor Championships will be held at the Wildwoods Convention Center Thursday, May 4 through Sunday, May 7.
The Tournament of Bands will feature performers ranging from middle school through college level and encompass marching bands, indoor guard, majorette, percussion and dance teams – as well as jazz bands. Over 220 competitive scholastic and independent units from nine states in the mid-Atlantic region will compete in the four-day competition.
