Waretown Library Events for March & April

bee 2The Waretown Library Branch have an event on Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 am  entitled, Keeping BeesHere’s a great opportunity to ask an expert about the life of bees: from different qualities of honey to the crucial role they play in keeping our gardens and food chain healthy.  Michael Long, beekeeper for Uriah Creek Apiaries, will also explain how to maintain your own hive, or just simply how to support these tiny pollinators.  He will also provide samples of honey for tasting.  Please register.

On April 6 at 11:00am the library will hold a program entitled “Edibles in the Landscape”.  Imagine walking through your attractive garden, plucking a choice herb here or a plump fruit there, adding to a more diverse, healthy, and fresh diet for you and your family.  Berry Jones, from Rutgers Master Gardeners of Ocean County, will show you how to incorporate edible plants into your landscape.  Not only will you learn how to enhance the beauty of your garden, but also how to use these plants to stop erosion, weeds, and back-breaking work.  Please register.

Self Defense Exercise

The Township of Ocean at Waretown Recreation Commission, 11th Street and Seneca Blvd.,  is offering an ongoing program for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from street attacks and personal assaults using leverage.  The class is designed to protect themselves from future falls through exercise, balance and strength training with a black belt instructor.  Classes are held 1st and 4th Thursdays at 7:00pm.

Pre-registration is required.  For 5 hourly class sessions the price is $15.00.  Call 609-693-5407 for information.

38th Ocean County Bluegrass Festival

Albert Music Hall will hold their 38th Ocean County Bluegrass Festival on Sunday, February 10 from Noon to 5pm; located at 131 Wells Mills Road, Waretown.

The program features a live stage concert of bluegrass music in the new Albert Music Hall building.  Be prepared to be entertained Pinelands style while listening to leading regional bluegrass bands from the tri-state area.  Appearing:  Heidi Olsen & The Night, Past Times, Last Whippoorwill Bluegrass Band, Cindy G & the Rising River Band, Mark Miklos & the Bennett Family, Heavy Traffic, Borderline, Lonesome Turnpike Ramblers, and the Bad Dogs Band.

The admission is $10.00 for adults and $1.00 for children 11 and under.  The doors open at 11:00am and music from Noon to 5:00pm.  Refreshments and gifts are available from 11am to closing.  No alcoholic beverages or smoking allowed.  All proceeds to benefit the Pinelands Cultural Society and Albert Music Hall Scholarship Fund.  For information regarding the show:  www.alberthall.org.

Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr., announces that the Ocean County Department of Parks & Recreation will be conducting the following programs:

HIKES: $12 per Adult/ $8 per Child  (age: 9 years – 16)

Waywayanda Hike- 6.5 miles  Traveling to Passaic County on Sunday, February 10 from 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.; steep, rocky, may be slippery.

Clayton Jaunt 4-5 miles Traveling to Monmouth County on Friday, February 15 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; flat, with some hills.

Turkey Swamp Jaunt- 4.5 miles Traveling to Monmouth County on Saturday, February 23 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; flat, easy.

Baldpate Mountain Hike- 5 miles Traveling to Mercer County on Sunday, February 24 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; steep, rocky, may be slippery.

Surprise Lake Hike- 5 miles Traveling to Passaic County on Sunday, March 3 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Steep, rocky, may be slippery.

South Mountain Reservation Hike-5 milesTraveling to Essex County on Saturday, March 9 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; hilly, rocky.

Batsto Lake Jaunt -4 miles  Traveling to Burlington County on Sunday, March 10 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; flat, sandy.

Carris Hill Hike- 5.5 miles Traveling to Passaic County on Sunday, March 17 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; steep, rocky, may be slippery.

Ramapo Valley Reservation Hike – 4.5 miles Traveling to Bergen County on Friday, March 22 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; steep, rocky, may be slippery.

Lake Sonoma Hike – 6.5 miles Traveling to Passaic County on Sunday, March 24 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; steep, rocky, may be slippery.
