LECTURE ON 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF GUADALCANAL
August 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Professor of History Richard Trimble will present “I’ve Served My Time in Hell: The 75th Anniversary of Guadalcanal” on Monday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m., Conference Rooms A & B, Building #10, Ocean County College Main Campus, College Drive, Toms River, NJ. Admission is free and open to the public.
August 2017 represents the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal. During World War II, U.S. Marines invaded this South Pacific island exactly eight months to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lessons learned on this obscure island would resonate throughout the ensuing three years of the Pacific War (sometimes called the Asia-Pacific War, the theater of World War II fought in the Pacific and East Asia).
A special focus of this lecture will be on “Manila” John Basilone. Born in New York and rasied in New Jersey, Basilone was a U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, who at the age of 29, was killed in action. He received the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both of these decorations in WWII.
