Rotary Minute July 2017

May and June were exceptionally busy months for us starting with the Interact Installation and Pinning Ceremony . Members of LTHS Interact Club, their parents and friends along with Interact advisor Ms. Keena Frechette and members of the Forked River Rotary bid adieu to the student leaders of Interact 2017 and celebrated the induction of the new Board of Directors for Interact 2018!! Interact is a leadership club that teaches students that true leadership is a learned skill that comes from teamwork. Interact teaches students to accept responsibility, show respect for others, and to collaborate with their team to work towards common goals. With contributions of time and service both locally and internationally (soup kitchen volunteers, assisting the Rotary Club with the annual Thanksgiving Feast and Elf Program and hosting a fun family night with the Wizards – just a few of the many projects this past year) Interact 2017 and the outgoing leadership team has set the bar high for this incoming board with accomplishments that make us very proud! And for the 2 nd consecutive year our LTHS Interact Club received a Presidential Citation from District 7500! Congratulations LTHS Interact – We are so Very Proud of You!!

The 5th Annual Rotary Club of Forked River Doggie Derby was a howling success!!! Man’s best friend was celebrated at this Hometown Family Event on Sunday June 4th with canine demonstrations and competitions, vendors and food, music, rescues and activities for the young, the not so young and all our furry friends. It was a day that brought us together to celebrate all our furbabies and to benefit the many charitable contributions the Rotary Club of Forked River continues to make to our community and our citizens. For some fabulous photos of our four-legged friends and their companions check out the beautiful photographs taken by Dawn Davis Photography! Many thanks to Dawn who spent her day capturing our furry friends and their humans! June was also graduation month. As the students from Lacey Township were preparing to make the transition to college, the Rotary Club of Forked River announced that 13 high school seniors had been selected to receive Rotary scholarships. These 13 Lacey students were selected from a pool of applications submitted by graduating seniors from Lacey Township High School, Donovan Catholic High School and MATES. Each year the Rotary Club of Forked River presents scholarships to deserving students who work towards service in their community. Winners are selected not only for their academic achievements but also for their commitment to “Service Above Self”, the Rotary hallmark. In recognizing this leadership and community service, the Rotary Club of Forked River awarded more than $25,000.00 in scholarships this year to Lacey student leaders. This year an additional “Service Above Self” scholarship was presented in honor of the late Rotarian William “Bill” Whitson. Since its inception the Rotary Club of Forked River has awarded nearly $900,000.00 to Lacey students. The recipients this year were: Gabriella Barth, Carley Bullock, Sarah Fedak, Kaitlyn Gavin, Marissa Iiaria, Jared Knoeller, Hunter MacPherson, Joseph Nagy, Sarah Phillips, Jordan Rensel, Hailey Rooney, Kristen Santoro and Kylie Weissenburger. Congratulations to the Class of 2017 Scholarship Winners!

Did you happen to notice all the U.S. Flags flying in town on Memorial Day and Flag Day? If you’ve ever wondered where those American Flags come from, they are there because of the joint efforts of the Forked River Rotary and the businesses that sponsor and support this tradition of saluting the USA! We’d love to see all of Rt 9 and Lacey Rd proudly flying our Flag. It’s not too late to join this salute to America! In addition to Memorial Day and Flag Day our program includes Independence Day, Labor Day, A Day of Remembrance and Veterans Day. Rotarians will put your flags out by 9am and return to take them down before sundown. For as little as $35.00 a flag (for all remaining 4 Flag Days) we will do this for you!! See any Rotarian for more information on how you can be part of this show of pride!
